Dos canciones para M.

L’amour avaix pris chez eux la forme de l’obstination

                                                                       CAMUS

I

No necesita ocultarse

Es fruto de un tenaz rechazo

A morirse de inanición:

Un vacío fiel

Espera y es tenazmente

Oscuro.

Otro día único comienza

El amor es la encarnación incesante de la fe.

II

Sermón de verano. Reclínate en el césped

Hay buena sombra

Vino ¡Oh, amable sangre del sol!

La montaña. Todas las montañas son amor

Colinas de trigo

Melodías de azucenas.

La muerte no es tan poderosa

La seda lo es más. La huella

De tus pechos

En mi corazón.

En mis entrañas

Se halla tu montaña amorosa.

En lo más profundo de mí

Tu suave llanto.

Thomas Merton (Prades, 1915 - Mueang Samut Prakan District, 1968)

In silence

Be still

Listen to the stones of the wall.

Be silent, they try

To speak your

Name.

Listen

To the living walls.

Who are you?

Who

Are you? Whose

Silence are you?

Who (be quiet)

Are you (as these stones

Are quiet). Do not

Think of what you are

Still less of

What you may one day be.

Rather

Be what you are (but who?) be

The unthinkable one

You do not know.

O be still, while

You are still alive,

And all things live around you

Speaking (I do not hear)

To your own being,

Speaking by the Unknown

That is in you and in themselves.

“I will try, like them

To be my own silence:

And this is difficult. The whole

World is secretly on fire. The stones

Burn, even the stones

They burn me. How can a man be still or

Listen to all things burning? How can he dare

To sit with them when

All their silence

Is on fire?”

 Mi primer recuerdo traumático

Sentada en el comedor de la escuela
en primero o segundo grado
flanqueada por dos varones enormes
de séptimo, tomando dos
vasos de agua que rebalsaban.

 The first night

They approach

And pick a flower from our garden

And we don’t say anything.

The second night,

No longer hiding, they

Stomp on the flowers, kill our dog,

And we don’t say anything.

Until one day

The weakest of them

Enters our house alone

Robs us of light, and,

Knowing our fear,

Robs us of the voice of our throats.

And because we said nothing,

We no longer can say anything.

Días frescos

Todos necesitamos
un puñado

de días frescos
en verano
como estos.

Merecer
alguna vez
una bendición.

The tumult in the heart

keeps asking questions.

And then it stops and undertakes to answer

in the same tone of voice.

No one could tell the difference.

Uninnocent, these conversations start,

and then engage the senses,

only half-meaning to.

And then there is no choice,

and then there is no sense;

until a name

and all its connotation are the same.

Elizabeth Bishop (Worcester, 1911- Boston, 1979)

Misterios

Alguien abre una puerta

y recibe el amor

en carne viva.

Alguien dormido a ciegas,

a sordas, a sabiendas,

encuentra entre su sueño,

centelleante,

un signo rastreado en vano

en la vigilia.

Entre desconocidas calles iba,

bajo cielos de luz inesperada.

Miró, vio el mar

y tuvo a quién mostrarlo.

Esperábamos algo:

y bajó la alegría,

como una escala prevenida.

Ida Vitale (Montevideo, 1923)
